Christmas was quiet, and a lot of fun. We went to Auburn to stay
with the family on Jan. 2. The twins were a lot of fun, although it still
seems to perplex them that my eyes are "closed". It is fun to watch them as
they puzzle it out. I do hope, though, that they get it pretty soon. Dad
gave them "Little red wagons" for Christmas, and it was thrilling to watch
them. I pulled one twin in his wagon, and the other one patiently waited
for his turn. It was good to see they take turns so well.
I had my first blood test on Jan. 2, to check my thyroid levels. I
still haven't heard from the doctor, and I'm hoping I hear from her
tomorrow. I called and left a message--but I'm still really cold.
They are hitting us hard about proration. I'm sick of hearing how
bad it is for the kids. What people don't realize is that the students are
the last ones to feel any of this. They take our supply money, cut Library
funds, cut grounds contracts, all that. We're supposed to try to cut our
utilities by 10% or they will lock our thermostats.
We had a workshop on Jan. 5, and it was so very boring. The message
seemed to be "Fake your feelings--always smile, and fake that you care."
Well, if you don't care, why are you teaching? I care about all of my
students, but I expect them to take a little responsibility--and truly, I
think that's one of the biggest problems in education today--students aren't
expected to have any responsibility, and there aren't any consequences!
I had my first experience cooking with ground turkey Saturday. It
was fairly simple. I talked to my sister about it, but realized when I had
the turkey in the pan I didn't ask one very important question; "How do you
know when it's done?" I realized quickly, though, it browns pretty much
like hamburger--so it didn't cause me any problems. In my spaghetti, I
couldn't tell any difference--and with the French Bread Tammy suggested I
get at the grocery store last time we were shopping, I had a really good
meal.
My anatomy class is trying an experiment. We're all drinking a
bottle of water a day--during class right now, to see if increasing our
water intake makes us feel any better. I'm trying to drink a bottle of
water a day this month. I started last Thurs., and hopefully, by February,
I'll be ready to make it two bottles a day. I eventually want to get to 60
ounces, but I'm not sure I'll make it if I don't take it slowly. I'm also
hoping that maybe if I sip on the water throughout the teaching day, I won't
have to leave the room so many times.
I hope to be working with a Seeing Eye instructor net week. The
Kitty is not taking the patterned path to school, and she's forgetting abut
the right side of my body more than I'd like. I know a lot of it is my
fault because I haven't felt up to working her extra and because we didn't
work much this summer. I'm hoping I can change that! I just need a little
professional guidance. I'm also hoping we can work on working with Mom and
the dog at the same time. She doesn't like to lead if Mom is behind us!
I guess that's about it for this entry. Sorry to those who like
cuts--haven't taken the time to learn how to write those in e-mail. :-)
Have a great week, or time space until I write again!
