So I haven't posted here in a couple months now. I don't feel like I have missed anything really, as I still read every day, just I don't have a lot of interesting things to post about. This week however:
New Phone - Nokia N900
I finally moved into the smart-phone industry with the purchase of a new Nokia N900. It's pretty damn nifty and does just about everything I could possibly think of doing on a phone, or as it is commonly referred to, an Internet tablet with phone functionality. It isn't small, but so far I haven't found that to be a drawback.
It runs a custom Linux OS known as Maemo 5 (aka Fremantle) which for those keeping track, is a Debian based linux distribution. I'm also looking forward to the next version (previously known as Maemo 6) which is being developed in conjunction with Intel, who had their own developed OS called Moblin. The merged Nokia/Intel OS is now called MeeGo, and I suspect you will be hearing a lot more about this in coming months. MeeGo is also expected to be used in Netbooks, MIDs, TVs and set-top boxes around the world.
As part of my pre-order, I also received a set of bluetooth headphones, the Nokia BH-905. These have active sound cancelling, and unbelievably soft on your ears, and have a very decent ~20m range before they start to cut out. I'll be testing this more in weeks to come.
The biggest drawback so far is battery life. With the heavy use it has seen this week, I have had to recharge it every night. Given the vast functionality of the phone and having read a lot of reviews before hand I fairly much expected this.
Walking
Unfortunately the floor above our work space has finally been leased out after one year of emptiness. This made for a few days of hilarious parking antics as everyone suddenly realised we were a few bays short of a parking lot. Thus I have endeavored to begin walking every day again, which to be honest is a good thing since I'm fat bastard again.
Courtesy of the new phone and its pedometer tracking, I've been using it for a week now to keep track of my activities. The image to the right is a screenshot from the N900 with pedometer active. The first day is slightly less, due to it not being calibrated correctly for my length step. Let's see how long I can keep those walking stats up for...
TV
This week I've enjoyed quite a few shows, most of which seem to becoming to their end of seasons.
- Chuck - Fantastic for Chuck, but poor Ellie
- House - Was it real or wasn't it?
- Big Bang Theory - So THAT'S what happened to the elevator!
- The Ricky Gervais Show - Enjoy having this as background noise while concentrating elsewhere
- Doctor Who - Cool story as usual from Stephen Moffat, but the Doctor, well I don't not like him...
- BSG - Finally finished all seasons, Razor, and The Plan. I can say now, I'm a fan, and am very glad I came back to watch all of these.
Still on the books to watch are V, Season 1 of Psychoville, and a couple episodes of Stargate: Universe.
That's the wrap. I'll finish up by saying, head has been razor-ed back to a #2 (7mm), which I think now entitles me to grow a beard. Tonight will be dinner & karaoke at Seizan's where I won't be singing, but feel free to come along - any company would be appreciated.
