RP Meme: Gender & Sexuality

Mar 18, 2009 21:14

Snagged from half the flist. Look at me distracting myself from writing my dissertation!

1. What gender of character do you play more of, male or female? Why?

At the moment, I actually have a pretty even spread, girls to guys. More girls, if you count AT. But, I don't really go for a specific gender when I'm picking characters, to be quite honest.

2. Is this different or the same as your own gender?
I'm a girl, and the scales are tipped ever so slightly in the favour of the girls, so... same.

3. Do you find that your gender makes it easier or more challenging to play your characters?

I generally find it easier to get into playing my girls. Maybe I'm more confident as a girl, playing girls... I don't even know why, because I'm really not a girly-girl at all.

4. What sexuality / gender identity do your characters have?

I have Angela and Mac who are bisexual, one canonically, the other just grew that way in RP. The rest are all straight (or as straight as you can be when there's so much glitter around).

5. How does your character's sexuality and gender identity define / affect their personality?

If it defines any of my characters, it would have to be Angela. Her open-mided, try anything mindset is a big, big part of her canon, even if she does try and buck the whole 'labels' thing. She's just very aware of her sexuality, and uses it to her advantage, usually because it's fun.

And the rest of them... well, it just tends to take a backseat in their lives.

6. Do you tend to predominantly play characters of a certain sexuality? If so, why?

For the most part, I tend to stick to canon (with Mac being the one exception to the rule). I just find it easier and more comfortable to work with something that's been established as a firm part of the character.

7. To what extent do you write / play your character's sexual or romantic life?

I'll always be a little 'shipper at heart, I can't help myself.

In RP that comes out in some characters more than others. With characters like Angela, her entire canon is made up of dating anecdotes and tales of her various sexual adventures, so with her, I go into that side of things a lot. She's really all about the love.

Mac... well, when she had a love life to play, I played it all out. Lately she's been rather quieter in that respect, so... Yeah.

While it's also a fairly big character point for Jacob, who for all that he's a big bad werewolf, seems to be permanently pining over someone, so the fact he's actually in a long term normal relationship is quite a big thing. A lot of that doesn't get played out, though. The power of handwavey is used.

Shawn has his long-distance thing with Lana, which does get played out, but not a whole lot, simply because they're off island, and I have the attention span of a gnat sometimes. My bad.

It all tends to depend very much on my level of enthusiasm for the character at the time.

8. How has the character's romantic life affected his character development?

Oh, character development. God, I suck at thinking about that.

I guess, with Jacob his relationship with Paige has definitely pushed him on and away from pining over Bella, which I for one, loooove. He really needed that.

There was a long-ass road for Angela to get where she is relationship-wise, which could be considered character development in... some way.

Mac when she has been in relationships does get a lot more confidence, and I think her relationship with Cally gave her a lot there. It went down sharply when she left, but she's been slowly clambering back from that.

9. Do you set 'ships' or plan for your characters to be together with other characters, or do you allow their relationships to develop organically? Why?

Oh, ORGANIC. I... really don't plan at all when it comes to these things, so what goes on is usually completely off-script. If there's a spark between characters, I run with it. After that, it's just a case of seeing where it goes.

Case in point would be Angela's relationship with Hannibal. The amount of OOC planning that went on there was... well, pretty much nil. And still is. Very much an OMG IT JUST HAPPENED thing.
It's more fun that way, I think, and less likely to feel forced.

10. Do you change the gender identities / preferred sexualities of canon characters? Why / why not?
It really depends on the character. In general, I don't. The one where I did, it was just the way things progressed, and not an actual plan (see aforementioned 'ew planning').

One day I will do a proper update. Probably when I have something to say that can't be summed up in 'Oh God, make this semester be over already!'.

milieux, meme, i should really make an rp filter, fandom high
