As if the headlines couldn't get much more grim--despite everything the talking heads are telling you, we're not exactly winning this war--today i came across this
charming little story about how fleeing Iraqi civilians are, apparently, now feeding *our* starving soldiers:
"They had slaughtered lambs and chickens and boiled eggs and potatoes for their journey out of the frontlines," Wilson said.
utterly charming.
and according to
another storyone of many following the lovely bickering amongst our military community, Atty. Gen. Rumsfeld is "micromanaging" the war and not listening to the military. never mind that the generals A) always want more soldiers and firepower than they get, and B) they never take responsibility for failure because to do that would be like a coach admitting his team wasn't good enough to win, or he messed up.
another article "He thought he knew better. He was the decision-maker at every turn," the article quoted an unidentified senior Pentagon planner as saying. "This is the mess Rummy put himself in because he didn't want a heavy footprint on the ground."
it makes one wonder how we're supposed to win a war when our military and government prefers to bicker on who screwed things up (oh, but wait, things are going just fine aren't they?).
like a lot of you, i didn't want this war ever to happen in the first place, but we've started this thing now, and it's our responsibility to finish it because leaving Saddam Hussein in power at this point would be disastrous. he knows we're out to get him and he'll fight us to the bitter end. yes, people will have to die, soldiers and civilians... yes, we may be looking at an occupation constantly plagued by suicide bombers and shit like that, but this is the mess we've gotten ourselves into thanks to our short-sighted leadership, and we must follow through with all those promises we were so eager to break in the past for the sake of "putting a good face" on things. if we don't, we'll have an even bigger mess on our hands.
