So Comiket is completely different from American cons, I can't speak for any other cons in Japan but I assume they'd be pretty close but with different focuses. Comiket is the Comic Market so it's all about doujin and novels. The con is three days (10a-4p), each with a different genre of doujin being sold. Day 1 is a lot of shojo stuff so doujin series being sold that day were Hetalia, Heart no Kuni no Alice, Hakuoki, Togainu no Chi, Sengoku Basara, Final Fantasy, also all Gundam series, fighting games, ect. Day 2 was more shonen series including Reborn!, One Piece, Naruto, Gintama, Prince of Tennis, Yu-Gi-Oh, D.Gray Man, ect. And Day 3 was mostly tentacle stuff, we didn't go that day. The Halls were arranged by series and each series was arranged by pairing. So it was rather nice you could just find everything at once.
The breakdown is under the cut, it's actually pretty interesting to see all the stuff they had like things for western music and idols (though unsurprising I guess). They actually had like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, EVEN CSI??

The size of Comiket is sort of hard to convey, if you've been to AX their attendance rate is around 45,000. Well Comiket's attendance rate 510,000+. If you haven't been to AX, know that Detour is about 5,000 and ACen is about 20,000. So yeah, holy shit right?
The "dealers halls" were the entire con, so you were either there to buy doujinshi, sell doujinshi, or cosplay. They'd have guests at things like Jump Festa, but not here and they don't have panels or anything like that. Again it's probably different at other cons, but the halls weren't anything like the dealer's room because it didn't have any merchandise only self-published doujin. I guess it's more like a giant artist alley except no one sold prints, though there were a few tables that also had a couple pins and small stuffed things (one guy had little Murkowls and Hibari hedgehogs, very cute). Most of the areas I went to were all female sellers too as most of the doujin artists were girls, so that was really cool. Also, they were all so super nice most of the time you get small handmade gifts when you bought something. I got a little cute pack of gum with Kokuyo characters on it, tissue packs with character cards in the front, little flyers, ect.
One of the biggest things I noticed about buying doujin over there was how much Americans get ripped off buying doujin here. And it really pisses me off. Doujin that I bought was anywhere from 500-1800 yen (about $6-21), however the expensive ones were very worth the price becuase they were really long and beautifully printed. They'd probably be sold for twice the amount here and I hate that that money doesn't go to the artists. BI I'd only ever bought two doujin from a con dealers room before but pretty sure I never will again now after Comiket.
Something else I only vaguely knew about beforehand is that there's also second-hand doujin shops. Now I know what you're thinking, "used doujin?? How can you read it don't all the pages stick together?" No. We went to Mandrake in Ikebukuro twice and even though it was hard to find what you wanted it was becuase they had sooo much! It's a really good thing I don't live in Japan becuase I'd have bookshelves full of doujin and I'd probably be spending my Friday nights down at Mandrake. BI It was cute though because the girls who worked there did so in cosplay and the first time we went it must have been Hetalia night because they were all different countries. X3 Also, doujin is sold at normal bookstores and stores! They have a small selection at some of the Animates and major bookstores we went into had back walls full of non-official books! It was pretty cool. Also, one of the book stores was having a 100 yen (like $1.20!) sale on all manga volumes!
Cosplaying there was soo amazing and I'm really glad I did. Unlike cons here, you can't go to or leave the con in your cosplay. Partly because you have to pay to cosplay and also because it's not acceptable to walk around in cosplay (though I did see a girl as Lag Seeing in the bathroom of Tokyo Station after Day 1 ahah). They have separate changing rooms for girls and boys to change into their cosplay. You pay about $8 and then go into this giiiiant room where there's hundreds of cosplayers getting into their costumes-- hopefully you're not shy about getting naked! X3 If you want to hang out with other cosplayers or get your picture taken/take ones of other cosplayers you go to the photo area. Pictures aren't allowed in any other area!
It was sorta weird being in the photo area because at American cons usually there's photoshoots and people hang out with people doing the same series. Mostly cosplayers just stayed in their own little area as the constant stream of people scrambled for pictures of them. Some people did group together for certain series but not really as much like they do here. And no one was fucking around like we do in America. XD Also, most cosplayers don't make their own costumes in Japan. And why would you? There's entire shops selling all kinds of costumes from tons of series. It's very accessable and not that expensive. So it was strange because while everyone looked really good I wasn't all that impressed just because almost no one had made their stuff. :/
People were extremely impressed with our costumes though haha. Probably the closest I will ever come to being one of the Beatles. I know I exaggerate a lot but girls literally freaked the fuck out. Expecially when I was Prussia and my sister was Germany. We're talking squealing, jumping up and down, wringing their hands, hiding their faces in embarrassment, SUUUUUGOOII-ing and Kakkoiiii-ing, ect. I thought one girl was gonna start crying. It was so adorable and simultaneously flattering and embarassing for us because we couldn't really talk to them in Japanese so I mostly smiled and kesesese'd while Erin shook her head at me which would revive a new wave of squealing. It was particularly funny walking down the Prussia/Germany asile. Several times we noticed there were groups of two or three girls huddled together looking at us, giggling, and then would run away when we looked over. It was cute but a little unnerving even though we knew people weren't saying bad stuff. We were also given little things from artists that liked our cosplay like cookies and from one girl-- a crochet'd tomato phone charm! Everyone was so nice, they were calling us "the real Prussia and Germany"! ;__;
Language barrier aside I did still meet some people and we exchanged e-mail addresses. And at one point I managed to talk to a Russia and a Hungary through ~*~*~the power of Hetalia~*~* how fucking beautiful is that. We ran across them in East Hall and I cowered from the Hungary so she pretended to chase me with her pan and Russia was like B> and said like "you look cool" in a heavy accent. It was fantastic and magical.
There was also a good variety of series that were being cosplayed. That was soooo nice. It takes awhile for people here to watch series from the new seasons but of course people are up on their anime over there! There was plenty of Basara, Hakuouki, Arakawa, stuff you'd very rarely see cosplayed here and really only at AX! I honestly don't remember seeing any Bleach cosplayers, though maybe there were a few. And there was only like a dozen Naruto cosplayers. Even for Hetalia there wasn't an overwhelming amount. I'm trying to think if there was something that the majority of people were cosplaying but I can't really think of anything!
People wanted to see what I bought so here it is. I spent the majority of my time in East Hall. Comiket is like heaven for people with unusual pairings/series because with 35,000 sellers they're gonna have what you want. Hence my extreme happiness upon finding lots of Russia/Prussia (Hetalia) and a Bykauran/Mukuro (Reborn!). I don't even like Ken/Chrome (Reborn!) that much but I got it cuz I was like pfft when am I gonna find this again? I found a dude selling GAR Hetalia doujin that looked hilarious but I think I was out of money. = 3=
Reborn! doujinshi. Byakuran/Mukuro (circle: Ningen-Nigoh) and Ken/Chrome (circle: Miya Sekiya). Plus freebie Kokuyo gum that came with the latter and a Ken pin I bought. Ken merchandise! Can you believe it?!
Hetalia Spain/Romano doujin. I wish I had been able to get a bit more, but ran out of time. Top is Cappuccetto Rosso (circle:
www), it's sooo adorable. Chibitalia and Chibimano are Little Red Riding Hoods, Spain is the wolf, and HRE is the little woodcutter. No one dies. Bottom (circle:
www) is young Romano thinking about working at Spain's house, ect.
Hetalia Russia/Prussia doujin. These are four of my favorites, the top ones are probably my favorite circles! Top left: Do You Remember Me? (circle: Love Potion no. 9), she always puts in the Bad Touch Trio and that makes me happy! Top right: Love is just like standing on Ice (circle: Bee*), doubtless the most beautiful doujin I bought (more pictures below to prove it). Bottom left: (circle:
Regulus), Britannia Angel is drunk and turns them into catboys pfft. Bottom right: Andante (circle:
nebu), love this art style.
This is a close up of the Bee* book above just to show how amazingly it's printed.
Hetalia Russia/Prussia doujin. Like Tears in the Rain and Strawberry Hard Pain (circle:
ugly girl) and (circle:
Ag.)
Hetalia Russia/Prussia doujin. All of these are by
Nemuri, she probably thought I was saying the wrong word when I just came up and was like "Everything." B< The one of the far left is kinda infamous between those of us that went of the trip because it freaked everyone out. XD Russia gouges Prussia's eyes and breaks his arm ("I guess you don't want that arm!~") haha..
Hetalia Russia/Prussia doujin. The middle and white ones are anthologies, the tin came with the one it's on (it has a rabbit and bear on it :3).. I'm getting to lazy to write down circles.
Hetalia Bad Touch Trio doujin.
Yu-Gi-Oh! doujin. Got one of these for old times sake. :3 Second picture is cover with the jacket removed.
My pictures are
here.
Idk what else people would like to know, just ask if you have a question about something.
