Nor does it cross the author's mind just how tacky it is to break up with someone that way. Rhetta may have had a poor image of Mike, but the reader had an even worse image of him.
If the readers are like I was back in the day when Deanna was regularly putting Michael off for marriage, my thought was that she was wisely avoiding marrying the guy because she found out what he was really like.
One of the first Deanna monthly letters made it clear that her interest in Michael had a lot to do with rebellion against her mother, a subject to which Lynn Johnston would feel some empathy. While Lynn rebelled by dropping out of school and marrying a guy who was 12 years older than she was, Deanna married a heartless monster who ended up mistreating her parents on multiple occasions. Those mistreatments seemed to make Deanna happy, showing off her cruel side on more than one occasion.
Cruel.....and fucking stupid. Anyone with a functioning fucking brain would get that someone fresh off of the boat has to be twice as good as an Anglo to be seen as barely acceptable but you can't get that through her thick skull.
I used to think that it was Lawrence that put the boot in on Howard Erk.....well, hm or John. Anthony was the last person on Earth I expected to see dishing out bother.
I remember at the time on this board everyone was hoping it would be Lawrence and begging that it would not be Anthony. Many commenters were very angry when it ended up being Anthony.
Those last few panels with the way Rhetta was drawn with those giant arms, she was not far from a fighting Uruk-Hai.

When he breaks with her via text message, it never crosses his mind what her image of him becomes.

It's like how she doesn't realize how up his own asshole he was when he finally broke it off with Martha.

It doesn't make sense that she'd want to waste her time with someone who'd rather be thought as a heartless monster than feel pain or regret, does it?
