"Haul some marks!" says Mike as he puts something in his filing cabinet. My internet searching for "haul some marks" as a phrase has failed. I found "get good marks." I don't know "haul some marks." Is this obscure Canadian slang, a bizarre Britishism, or just Lynn Johnston making up slang?
It's the last of the three and it's telling that her mind tries to turn hallmark into 'haul mark'. She won't expose herself to ridicule by asking an actual child how they speak so the same person who's sure that drug people 'eat' Stimucrank comes up with something that sounds as if a child might say it.
Rodney Dangerfield could tell a cashier in a bookstore "I'd like to tame your shrew" and make it sound natural and clever. Charles Dickens can invent names that are instantly iconic and make you understand the character perfectly. Lynn can't do any of those things but she THINKS she can so that's all that matters, I guess.
The look on Michael's face when Weed yells "LET'S PARTY!" should be one of an absolute idiot coming to the realization that he's an absolute idiot who has accomplished nothing except wasting a day of moving and who knows how much of his dad's money. The question we have is why he thought that the problems of the dorm were somehow disconnected to Weed. Oh, right- because he's stupid.
He's a moron who won't jettison people unless they actually need him. Martha chewed him up and spat him out because she demanded that he live in the real world. Lawrence tricked him to make a fool of him. Rhetta is a windshield and he is a bug because she says his words mean things he can't see.
Also, he's a jabbering dupe who doesn't understand what people would approve of. He thinks ditching Frat Rat Without A Frat means no one would ever talk to him again when it's damn obvious that people would say he took his time wising up.
The question we have is why he thought that the problems of the dorm were somehow disconnected to Weed.
Certainly the excuse he gave to Elly about the improvement in his studying is lost with Weed present. I suppose the only real advantage is that he avoids the kind of pranksters who are into the destruction of property. However, the very nature of Weed is that actual weed will be involved and easily accessible. This comic strip makes that readily apparent to the reader, if not to Michael or Elly.
The big dummy never does see obvious stuff like 'girlfriends trying to make him jealous', 'gay kid afraid of becoming homeless' or 'kid sister terrified of raging asshole older brother' bit, like the dough-head he calls a mother, prides himself on how observant he is.
And thus we end with Mike spending John's money to solve a problem that isn't what he thinks it is. The reason dorm life is chaotic is that he acts like an assbucket when what happened when Jughead and Shaggy did a fusion dance gets him drunk off his underage ass but he won't disentangle himself from someone whom he should avoid because he has his parents' understanding of how people make friends and relate to one another..
It helps that Michael, like all Pattersons, is a coward who will never, ever stand up for himself when it actually counts but instead think that Avoidance of Confrontation is a virtue as pure as Avoidance of Responsibility and Avoidance of Consequences.
I remember her alleged wisdom about complaining being good for you unless you're complaining to the person you're complaining about. I'm thinking this person must think that everybody would be as graceless and angry as she is.
He is ready to beat up the kid that took the door off his room, but that leads directly to him leaving. He's not ready to see if his threats of violence had the appropriate effect. Nor does he question the whole idea that giving his key to some other kid should never have happened in the first place.
Imagine trying to explain that it's stupid to expose himself to theft like that. Imagine his unthinking repetition of the pretzel logic that made it happen.
