As for why you just know Elly is going to fret and fume that she has to check the machine or struggle with inboxes, let's Learn From Just Humble Veterans:
The idea is that the dodo receiving the text message thinks that s/he isn't thought of "important" enough to "waste" time on. That must be why Dorko pulled this gank move:
"Dear Michael, thanks for the email. Here's my reply:
1. I didn't apologize, as I have nothing to apologize for. I guess you mean that because I dumped you, I spared you any impulse you might have had to apologize for being such an awful boyfriend. But I never expected you to apologize. Pattersons don't apologize. Too human."
2. Yeah, I have no inclination to cry. I've never been happier."
3. I've already started over. You'll probably end up with some girl you knew in third grade.
4. You're welcome. And thank you for promising this is the last thing you say to me. But I don't trust you to keep that promise, so I'm blocking you.
P.S. you were the "other guy." You've been the "other guy" for a long time now, gutless."
Also, when Elly gets upset that Rhetta 'means' more:
it never occurs to her that when he talks to her, he conveys actual information. Given his tendency to run his yap about nothing and his inability to understand that other people get to talk too, Rhetta might as well get eight pages of "I AM A FISH."
Not only that, but Elly thinks phone calls are better than email but not as good as letters. Why? Because the letters are in envelopes? it's so stupid. Just like Grandpa Jim thinking that the email from his brother (not "friend," as retconned) means less than a card in an envelope. Probably because he wants to know Ernie took the trouble to put a card in a mailbox. 🙄

There is something else she could say:
5. You're too bloody stupid to listen and too full of yourself to understand what you look and sound like.

You'd probably get called a Nazi if you were to ask "So a person has to inconvenience himself to make it mean something?"

Or at the very least a picky face who doesn't know she's a real person with feelings.

more weird verbal anachronisms. "phone" as a verb.

More old person says "new media bad" bullshit. A long e mail is actually more similar to the letters these people value above phone calls!
