What is up with this carton of milk? I thought milk cartons opened up like this:

What's up with the carton of milk is that Lynn doesn't know how to draw one.

I was secretly hoping there was some sort of secret milk lore in BC that Lynn was adapting.

No doubt she drew the carton from memory, and as usual, her memory sucked.

is she used to those bags?

She did draw the bags/pitchers in earlier strips, but at some point, I guess she switched to having the characters use cartons.

In the March 1989 storyline, reprinted in March 2018, when Elizabeth broke the milk container and was afraid to tell Elly what happened, it was a carton that got broken, not a bag. I felt so sorry for Elizabeth in those strips.

Oh, right--I just reviewed the strips in that arc.

In March of 1980, Lynn had John pouring milk from a bag in a pitcher:

But by May of 1981, she showed a carton of milk on the kitchen table:

Even back in 1981, she did not know how to draw a carton with an end opened.

Ha, yes--good catch! If only there had been a way for her to know what it should look like. Oh, well, that just wasn't possible. 🙄

It's a reminder that the fragile nitwit heroine will not believe in bad things happening without malice intended.
