And here is the proof that Mike is a damn nepo baby:
brushing off a practical concern with an appeal to dumping his problems on someone else and ignoring them while at the same time being too stupid to see the real menace: having the same drinking problem his parents
1. "there are guys waiting to get into this building, man" is another example of a common theme in this strip- when a Patterson does something that seems to be impractical or selfish, there's a throwaway line to make it look altruistic. Sure, Michael is going to give up a paid-for room out of total selfishness and because a dorm room simply isn't Good Enough For Him Because He's Better, but it will benefit someone else so Where Are His Wings and Halo?
2. John is telling his daughter that he didn't really have fun all those years ago, and if he knew then what he knew now, he'd....what? Not go out with friends? Not drink? I'm not saying that overconsumption of alcohol is a good thing, but this is not an anti-drinking message. It's an Anti-Experience and Anti-Youth message. John's boomer lens forces him to twist his youth into something better left behind, a period of nonstop stupidity that fortunately ended so that he could be a Wise Older Man who has replaced parties and booze with a basement train set and coffee. I don't party like I did in college, but the idea that it's because "I know better now" is ridiculous. I'm just not in school anymore, I'm not under the stress of classes and exams anymore, and most of all I don't have the body and brain that bounces back easily from that anymore. I don't REGRET being carefree and experimental and not a ridiculous curmudgeon when I was in my freaking early 20s. John is telling his daughter that the quicker she becomes an old scold, the better.
It's thinking like this that made 'sensible' people like Deanna congratulate the brainless, dickless twat for having the courage to tap out hard on making a decision that might make The Guys angry, destroy his credibility in the publishing industry and leave someone else to clean up his mess.
He's an 'adult' version of the surly incel whining in confusion and despair because a girl had enough of his weak BS. It's why "I don't have the patience, discipline and talent required to master playing a guitar" 'means' that Becky will die in the gutter.
Also, this boomer idiocy about hating being young informs Greg Evans's big old wad of thinly disguised contempt for children called Luann. The alleged mother feels actively ashamed of having been a child and it shows.

That is definitely the case. However, it is not practical. Mike is in a private room and judging from his getting naked right out of bed, that room had an en suite bathroom. In a dormitory this is not going to be a cheap room. Mike is failing to account for the idea that John Patterson's ability to pay for the most expensive room in the dormitory may have also been the reason why Mike was able to get in the dormitory and was not one of those people who is waiting for a spot in the dorm. Josef Weeder, as we will eventually find out, is even richer than Mike, so moving out is also not a financial hardship for him. These are two rich boys who know they can do whatever they want whenever they want it because daddy will pay for it.
They did make a big deal about April earning money to pay for university and also buying furniture for her room. Michael and Elizabeth did none of that. Michael's money was to pay for gas for the car to go on dates.

All of this, and also I call bullshit that there'd be "guys waiting to get into this building." Not two+ months into the semester.
His/Lynn's inability to understand English as human beings speak it distracts people from his message: "being a crabbed-up jerk old before his time is totally boss."

Meanwhile, April will have to work two jobs because John wants to be careful with his money.

There would be two empty rooms that stayed empty until next September.

Yup. Or possibly January, if transfer students needed housing.

Either way, it's a vast empty space left vacant by two vast, empty heads.
