Turnip and face and fall fair is a lot of elements. I think Lynn just opened up one of collection books and decided to "borrow" one of her own stories.
Also, we have to remember that without a 'real' April to be oppressed by living a life she didn't approve of and having friends who she didn't like, the choices were
a) recycling Liz's storylines
b) fretting idiotically about dangerous information.
c) ignorant bleating about fame, friends, fun and Alan being more loved.
and
d) free-floating anger about Elly being tied down.
In the first strip, Elly should have told John, "Turn off that TV so I can sleep. If you just have to watch TV, go watch the one in the living room and don't turn the sound up too high." On the other hand, John should have realized that Elly was trying to tell him without words to turn off the bedroom TV because she was trying to sleep when she put the pillow over her ears. John and Elly are equally clueless.
While the dad said that, but would never do it, Elly is a woman of action. She will make those vegetable inedible. She has more follow-through than her father.
1. Zero attempt to draw the turnip and Michael's face to look anything alike. For the joke to work, they have to be similar, Lynn. This isn't even close.
2. Actual human talking to a child: "Did you make it look like someone you know?" Patterson in this strip: "Is it modeled after anyone we know?" Why would Liz know what "modeled" means, you stupid twat?
2) Lynn confessed the other day to having the characters speak the way she wishes people did....thus, the artificial, stagey, five year old imaging how grown-ups talk diction.

Not many good choices in that bunch, which is probably one of the reasons why April stories suffered compared to those of her siblings.

Chinese cooks are absolute geniuses with vegetables but Elly is probably too much of a damn bigot to even buy a Chinese cookbook.
Isn't there at least one strip where John is vegging out in front of the TV?

1) She disguises being racist grandma by blaming it on unwilling family members.
2) Just two:

When it comes to vegetables with Elly, I suspect she views them more as instruments of torture than food.
