Wrong Elizabeth. You wear costumes to a Halloween dance. That's the whole point.
This is not John's first appearance as a vampire, but you would think after the last time, he might be a little reluctant to do it again.

1) The doofus is well on her way to becoming the same always angry, impossible to please simpleton Elly is because her craving to be taken seriously makes her look like the knuckle-dragging amoeba-brain Elly is. The kadodie thinks that since 'only' small children dress up for Halloween, dressing up will make people laugh at her.
2) The misadventure John stumbled through is another reminder that Lynn fears one thing more than being old: being lumped in with kids.

She's not her birth weight so she's got it in her head that everyone else sees Jabba the Hutt too.

John does look like a total idiot, but it's not because of his costume.

The women would be frightened just by seeing a man's face in the window, regardless of costume, and good for them defending themselves in a nonlethal manner. As I have heard, if a woman is alone in the woods and she sees a bear or she sees John Patterson, she would prefer to be with the bear, even if John is offering a discount on dental work.
