Michael wants to be a writer because he can read his mother's thought-bubbles that she mourns her decision to drop out of school Because She Would Have Been the Bestest Writer Ever if not for Fate. Liz becomes a teacher but it's not because of her inspiring teachers, it's because Lynn's head is firmly jammed up the a$$ of the 1950s and sees teaching as a perfectly acceptable Placeholder Job for an umarried woman until she can move on to her true profession of Mother and Wife and Housekeeper.
