As reminder, Edgar was born in December last year, so Edgar is 9 months old, so not a teenager. Veterinarian Elly is wrong. However, puppies do chew on and annoy the older dogs pretty much from the moment they can walk.
The problem is that Lynn is trying to show Edgar has grown but fails to remember that she overaged Edgar in order for him to be a part of the Farley death story. This was Edgar to Farley's height back when Edgar was just 4 months old.

By 48 weeks, or 11 months, most Old English Sheepdogs will have reached the majority of their adult size. Edgar is close but he is not there yet. Normally, I would not expect Lynn Johnston to know this, since she did not have access to the internet back in 1995. But she did have a vet for a sister-in-law in case she wanted to check it.
This is not a person who is interested in taking in new information when common sense serves her well. This is why Farley was his adolescent self all his life. It's also why she reframed instinctive behavior as that of a child in a suit.
On the other hand, it is absolutely correct to depict a Patterson's first thought at finding a toy being "haha too bad for the loser who lost this it's mine now." They start this attitude very young and never adjust it.
I think that the best epitaph for the family is something called The Narcissist's Prayer:
It's exactly why they see neutering as something done to make the owners' lives easier as they don't have to face people who want them to apologize for letting their lumbering idiot dog impregnate other dogs at random.
Quite right. Old Farley, close to a heart attack, was able to tread water with a kid in his mouth and keep his position next to the bank in the face of a raging river. That is the strength of an adolescent Farley.

The inability to share things is a recurring problem with the Patterson kids as they get older.

I blame parents who teach them that sharing means that the other person gets everything.

Male dogs sometimes treat their mothers like Oedipus did....

That was my first thought. Run, do not walk, to get that neutering done. And Sera needs to be spayed.

If it did happen, the whole bloody lot of them would unhinge their jaws and yell.

There's no incentive to get the dog neutered when the owners of the dog that gets impregnated will THANK you for making her a "grandmother" (barf.)

Do you think that was Oedipus' problem? He could not resist his mother's pheromones?
