Lynn honestly seems to have forgotten how blatant her ripoff of an Afterschool Special was:

There were few references to Gordon’s family and the kind of home he grew up in. From time to time, I gave readers a clue.

Clue? This is like an anvil to the head. Of course we never see his parents drunk and this is the first time the mom was dragged into it. This feels more like a retcon than a clue.

It makes sense that she's revising history to make Gordon look like a hard-luck case so that she can make John look like a savior instead of a figure out of Goodfellas. He can't be Touched By The Pattersons if he doesn't actually need their help.

Lynn does have the bad habit of over-exaggerating to make a point. It's not enough Gordon has one drunk parent. He has to have two. In fact, his parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles were all probably drunks.

She has the same bad habit when it comes to telling her own story: it's not enough to simply say that her mother looked like a perfectionist who could never be pleased. We get the insane shit she tells people in interviews.

Exactly! It's a shame she didn't give herself clues by reviewing old strips and making sure her new ones did not contradict them.

As I have said before, I get the feeling that she sees doing so as saving old homework. Once the year ends, she tosses all that stuff away and she's supposed to be able to forget it!
