The one where Elly breaks the fourth wall because John gets credit for things because he opens his damn mouth.
Synopsis: We're at a barbecue watching John as he 'wastes time' interacting with the guests while Elly does all the 'hard work' in the background. When things are over, Elly stares at us in disgust because people praise the person who they

Michael: "Gee pop, it's great that you are giving us your barbecue."
John: "You're welcome, Captain Exposition. But why are you calling me 'Pop?' You never did before."
First Strip: As I posted before, Elly is that person who points and comments as if she's a foreman of a construction crew, so she can take credit for things working out and avoid blame if they don't.

But it's a thing she likes to deny because she doesn't want to admit to being a bit of a jerk.

Also, the question Elly never asks herself is how people see her. What I see in today's strip is John interacting with the guests and thus putting together a great barbecue while his wife scurries around in the background like she always does. It isn't about the steaks, it's about being a good host but the social phobic with the need to whisper criticism doesn't get that.

I wonder if this was a real Lynn complaint, or was it Mavis?

Probably a Mavis complaint. Lynn doesn't appear to cook much if she can at all avoid it.

First strip, final panel: Elly, don't break the fourth wall and look at us! I feel violated!

Also, if Elly wanted credit for the barbecue, she could have turned it on, added the sauce, and turned the steaks, instead of monitoring the grill and telling John what to do.

She would just have to deal with the other men looking at her and saying, "What are you doing putting sauce on the steaks? John, keep your wife from ruining the steaks!" Part of her subterfuge may have been to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

Maybe? I kind of think no one would have cared.

You are right. It does appear that this crowd of unrecognizable friends would eat anything, the way they gulp everything down Patterson style.
