An all thought balloon comic strip. So much tell and so little show. It defeats the whole purpose of telling the story using a visual medium. This is a bad comic strip by both comic strip and Lynn Johnston standards.
On the other hand, the colourist is using the blandest colours possible, which does reflect just how terrible this comic strip is. Good on you colourist.
And the whole thing is predicated on the false generosity implicit in turning her husband into her valet slash keeper. The actual reason is that Lynn is an insecure idiot who, since she cannot be trusted, cannot trust. She assumed rightly that a man whom she cheated with might cheat on her but was wrong about whom he'd do it with.....thus the nonsense about the harem. We get to see the reason she offers up people who point out that Rod really loved being a dentist when she depicted Mike pissing himself and having a sad because The Big Mean MAN asked him to make a big mean business decision that might make people not like him. We establish the "THE WORK-A-DAY WORLD IS CRUEL AND BAD BECAUSE THEY EXPECT A SPECIAL PERSON LIKE ME TO DO THINGS THAT BORE ME!!!!!!!" premise with Mike's failed attempt to bribe a parking attendant:
My wife would have skinned me alive. And when we were married, I had a Master's Degree and was stocking shelves at Wegman's. She would have MURDERED me for quitting that job without another one lined up- and I would have deserved it.
Michael has just announced that they are not moving out, because he's arranged it so that they are unable to (because Dee's salary isn't enough, except it is.)
There is a good and positive reason that the woman does not shank her husband on the spot: it would mean that her mother was right. People who want to cut off their nose to spite their face, well, we all know people like that.
It's something somebody came up with who doesn't understand kids. Kids want to be something improbably useful, not something absurd. The only person who wants to be a clown growing up also wants to kill Batman!
My ex's relatives DID run away and join the circus. He had a cousin who decided circus life was for him, and ran away to join. Cousin was same age-ish as Ex, so he'd be around 50 now...
The irritating thing is remembering how she boasts about how Rod is responsible for her smile. She doesn't like his having a harem or working on other people but she loves having her own dentist. Lovely gal, ain't she?

did kids ever really want to join the circus or is that just something they made up in old books?
