Last Friday was one of the best nights of my life. Seriously. The beginning was a bit hectic. We stayed in Sydney at a hotel for the night, and getting there and getting organised was a bit of a stress (my mind felt like it was in a spin earlier). But once we got to the Horden at around 8pm, everything started falling into place...
As soon as we arrived, we organised a meeting place, and once I was through the gates, I ran inside. I was supposed to wait for some friends, cause they were going to put their merchandise in my bag, but I just couldn't wait; I was too excited. I ran up to the merchandise desk, bought two t-shirts, then realised that heaps of people were standing around outside, so I ran into the hall...
And saw that there were only two rows of people on the far right of the stage, so I ran up and grabbed a spot. I'd decided to wear my heeled knee-highs to give myself an extra inch or two, and I'm glad I did. From where I was standing, I had a clear, side-on view of the stage. I could see three microphones clearly, and the drum kit was just a bit over. The middle microphone...
We'd missed the opening act, no tears there (I'd heard they were shit. I downloaded one of their tracks off their website. Nothing special). I waited for about half an hour before the band started, so surprised at where I was. My view was more than I could ask for. I thought I'd get a couple of crappy glimpses of Trent and that'd be all. But no. I could see him through the whole fucking show. I could see his facial expressions. It was more than I could have asked for.
The band played for ages. There was no encore, which some people complained about, but they played for almost 2 hours. With no break. Jesus. Some people have no appreciation. But I didn't, and still don't, care. The show was amazing. It's left such an impression on me. I'd bought tickets for the second show that morning; I'd been comtemplating doing that for a while. They started with 'Pinion', and the band finally walked on stage. Before they'd even hit a note, I was glad I'd bought that ticket. Regret never crossed my mind.
Some surprising tracks they played were "Dead Souls", "Burn" and "The Big Come Down" - SO stoked about those. "Something I Can Never Have" was beautiful, and they didn't play it the second night, surprisingly. I got all teary in "Hurt", but how can you not? "March of the Pigs", "The Wretched", "Sin", "Terrible Lie" all kicked ass. They also played "Closer" and "Head Like A Hole", which they ended on.
Jerome Dillon is an awesome drummer. I love the way he plays. I didn't see the keyboardist till the end, cause there was a stack in my view. The lighting was amazing, which I saw more of on the second show. It was the only concert I've ever been to where I didn't start thinking "Ok, I'm tired now, when is this going to end?", which I usually do. That means so much to me. I just thought "I don't want this night to end". Trent played like he really wanted to be there; it was awesome. He said thankyou over and over, and I screamed it back. It felt more like a big party than a concert.
And I was straight the whole gig. I didn't take any drugs till after the show. I wanted to see it straight; it was my first NIN gig, I wanted to experience it straight to get the most out of it and remember the most I can for it. And I'm glad that I did.
I dropped a pill half an hour after the show. We went back to our hotel, which on the way there I started skipping and landed on my left foot at a bad angle and rolled it. I was hobbling about all night - but it didn't matter. I just saw it as a challenge. So we got back to the hotel and hung there for a while (it was a really nice suite we had), then headed to Hyde Park and hung out, smoked some pot, and I rode around on someone's bike (highly reccomended when on E's - it's a lot of fun). At 5am we had a percussion jam in the lobby of the hotel with the desk clerk - it was so random! And so much fun. I knew what I was doing and just went with the flow of the music and it felt amazing. Awesome. It was fantastic. We went for a brief walk to the park again later, and then headed back for sleep.
It was a fantastic, amazing night. It was just a night of all good. Fun. No issues, no problems. Just being around people that I really care about and having a good time. A great time. One of the best nights of my life.
