museum hopping

May 11, 2009 14:11

so after my very late start yesterday i went to the de Young museum, which has a very decent collection of modern western art and ancient to modern pieces from various non-european cultures - new guinean, mesoamerican, african etc. they had a warhohl exhibit, but i didn't want to pay the extra dollars...
unfortunately i made my move from my bed too late to go to the californian academy of sciences - that's the one in the building with the grass on the roof. apparently there are whole ecosystems set up in there. but i think i'll live. i've seen ecosystems. anyone who opened my fridge knows that.
then last night, i decided that due to my early slackness i should do something in the evening - so i went to a 9pm comedy show of local comedians at the club house. i sat in the front row and laughed loudly which earnt grins, thanks, and strange looks from the comedians. i love being 'involved' like that. some of it was a bit weird, some of it was plain gross, some of it was too local for me to get, and the rest of it was awesome.
today i went to three museums! the museum of craft and folk art (omg i wanted everythi g in the museum store) the SF museum of modern art - which was free due to mothers day and the opening of the rooftop gallery- and the cartoon art museum which was totally awesome and geek heaven. they had big sections on usagi yojimbo and the watchmen as well as a sort of history of the cartoon in print and animation.
these three galleries are all near yerba buena so i went back to the samovar tea lounge and had 2 chilled concoctions. both delicious. then later i had a 'mud pie' from Just Desserts (dammit someone is using the name mum and i always wanted for our imaginary dessert restaurant) which is like mousse on crack. it has nuts and marshmallows in it mmm. couldn't finish it though.
then i felt like just sitting so i went and saw star trek. which i really liked. i thought it was a good intro to the trekkie cannon for newbies, without being patronising for acquainted audiences. also it was funny. with hot men. and women. and uniforms...

so tomorrow i head to chicago - the windy city,  i think i am going to freeze, though it is a great excuse to do more shopping. i bought a cashmere cotton cardi on sale at the gap. woot.

i will get more pictures up on flickr and add some san fran images here - so check back later...
