DOOOOEEEET
and in the tradition of nixynixalot i am going to give commentary, though it probably will not be as hilarious.
COVERT AWARENESSclearly my band is a little bit dark and mysterious, but also socially and culturally aware. We are just a wee bit subversive. Our lyrics don't always make sense, but you get the overall message of our songs
and our first album is called
MARXUARCHThis was the maiden name of our pianist's great-grandmother who died at 105 just after we finished recording. She'd never met her and was really cut up about and so we wanted to honour that feeling of lost opportunities.
1.
1958 in AustraliaThis was written as an ode to Johnny Howard and it was all about the retrograde direction Australian politics was heading in.
"Even Robert Menzie was a man of vision Johnny"
2.
Spencer la Marchant MooreThis is a story song about how this botanist comes to the future and he's all dissappointed because all the plants he studied have become extinct. We're obliquely political!
"Where have all the pretty flowers gone/Mr Marchant wants to know"
3.
David IckeThis sounds like it's a cutesy song, because we play a lot on internal rhymes and assonance and really have fun with our lyrics, but it's actually based on Icke's writings about who's controlling the world.
"So give me a lick/Icke/Tell me who you thinky/who you wrote down in inky/Tell me who you thinky rules the world'
4.
Ein HaHoresh
It's all about a girl who goes on kibbutz in Israel where she has a series of awakenings, and realises that she's deeply disconnected to her god but loves her people. It's about an affirmation of community in spite of religion. Based loosely on our Drummer's experiences.
"And I remember the day/When I sat down in the dust/And I wondered where you'd gone/And I felt a hand upon me shoulder/A warmth in my side/And I knew i didn't need you/For I was not alone/In Ein HaHoresh"
5.
15th Baron Strange
A fun song about a pop culture savvy lord. It's all about having fun while you can baby!
"Ahead of his time/Making music with his money/But not making money with his mind"
6.
Bellanca PacemakerA love song where the relationship is likened to flying in a bellanca pacemaker.
"Oooooooooooooooooooo/ Bellance Baby/ Never come back down/ Never come back down/To Earth"
7.
Erkin Koray
It's about breaking down traditional barriers and not being scared of new things. Taking leaps of faith and judgement and the wonderful rewards that can come from it.
"If it weren't for Erkin Koray/ They woudn't rock in Turkey today"
8.
William BrociusA song about the injustice of bad luck.
"I was surrendering/ I was handing him my life/ When a bullet blew it all away"
9.
MuscaldyA song about wanting to escape the urbanity of modern life
"There's a little town/ that know one knows/ I want to get away/ To Muscaldy"
10.
Garbadine (self-titled)A song about obscurity
"Who's ever heard of Garbadine? / The fabric sure/ But what about the band?"
11.
Foster ResevoirAbout the water crisis, using the artificial lake in oregon as a symbol for human resilience, but also for our constant habit of fixing the symptoms not the cause
"We all need to drink/We'll drink til we're dry/ Then we'll build another Fosters/ To carry us through/ But what happens when that's empty too?"
12 (Hidden Song)
Mark 45 TorpedoAn accoustic track about the Iraq war and the individual versus the power of nations.
"What does the fisher man do/ When a Mark 45 comes tearing through?"
