S'Aussies might be interested in this...
Poetry Unhinged Festival
There are a couple of comps running (all under 50 lines, so if you write epics, forget it), including a comp of performing/reading a work!
There's also the biggie, the chance to earn yourself your first published collection (70pgs).... but UNFORTUNATELY, only open to South Australian ( Read more... )

that's bullshit
sorry but it is
i have a collection of the wirra wirra short story comp winners from 03 if you want proof (including my 3 pieces only one of which was aussie specific and that was set in waikerie) That comp was run by pretty much the same crowd. SA writers centre and the southern council areas.
Yes the bush poetry category is fixed and the multicultural category is WIDE open. You could totally write about monsoons if you can relate them back to your life here... contrast them.
and the open is just that OPEN.
so yeah don't rule yourself out.

and the monologue thing is a bit like entering a comp. I could second guess what they're really look for, but i could be equally as wrong doing something more accessible, cos they might sit there and think, oh well that was easy, didn't push her at all... so yeah.

apologies
i realise i can across as really aggressive then...

um, yeah, i do get what you're saying about the monologue, but well, it's just hard to know what to do. It's also one thing to say, do a piece that does this, but then you have to FIND one, that's well written, the right length or cuttable, the right gender and age group and that you would realistically play...

as for the poetry, i'm not saying that it mightn't make it EASIER to win if you write about local stuff, but if it's good enough it won't matter. Seriously.
