I can't explain the small Asian cohort at the footy and I'm not even going to try....too much potential for drawing stereotypes when it could just be random!
On the subject of Asian participation in Australian sport, though, two years ago I read a book called 'NIPS' to kids I was teaching. The book chronicled the formation of a cricket team at a 'New Arrivals' primary school after two boys failed to be selected for a club side which was largely filled by old private school boy descendents. The name of the team was the acronym of the school's name but ironic because the side was completely Asian and reflected the players need to expose and stand-up to the racism and tough odds they were experiencing. In an interesting connection, I recently read about a high school sporting team (I forget the flavour) in the US made up of kids from minority groups that insisted on calling themsleves 'Whiteys' when the champion opposing team in their town was called 'Chieftains'......counter-hegemony eat your heart out.
