Went to the football on Saturday....Australian Rules - pig-skin oval shaped ball, 4 big goal sticks and 4 little ones, heaps of contact and quite a few cute bums in tight shorts!! Went with my Dad which is always fun because he is fairly loud and raucous in a very refined, school-principal way. We ate pies with sauce and had a pint of West End ( Read more... )

Nah, I am a Port supporter and we are far more tolerant! Port for the reasons I outlined to BW but also out of a very warped sense of social justice....historically a team that has supported workers, embraced migrants and encouraged young Indigenous players. Tough, pull-no-punches men with even stronger mothers, wives, sisters and girlfriends. Crows win because of their namby-pamby technical competency. Power win AND lose becaus ethey play with guts, grit and heart. Love my boys!!

I can't explain the small Asian cohort at the footy and I'm not even going to try....too much potential for drawing stereotypes when it could just be random!

On the subject of Asian participation in Australian sport, though, two years ago I read a book called 'NIPS' to kids I was teaching. The book chronicled the formation of a cricket team at a 'New Arrivals' primary school after two boys failed to be selected for a club side which was largely filled by old private school boy descendents. The name of the team was the acronym of the school's name but ironic because the side was completely Asian and reflected the players need to expose and stand-up to the racism and tough odds they were experiencing. In an interesting connection, I recently read about a high school sporting team (I forget the flavour) in the US made up of kids from minority groups that insisted on calling themsleves 'Whiteys' when the champion opposing team in their town was called 'Chieftains'......counter-hegemony eat your heart out.
