Tutorial #1 - Matsuura Aya - "joy"

Hmm.. well I like how this icon turned out so I thought I'd do a tutorial on it.

Tutorial was done in Photoshop 7.0. It should be easilly translated to Paintshop.

01. First I took this image of the lovely Aya Matsuura & cropped it down to how I wanted it.

02. Next step is to prepare the base to however the base needs it, whether it be darkening or lightening. For this certain one, I just sharpened it (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen). Then I auto-colored & auto-contrasted it (Image > Adjustments > Auto color/Auto contrast)

03. Then over the base we put the dark blue exclusion layer. I used the color 09092B.

04. Now we make a copy & paste a duplicate of the base on top of the exclusion layer. Desaturate this layer (Image > Adjustments > Desaturate). Then set the layer to 'soft light'. But I wanted the purple in her dress to stay that bright, so I took the eraser at 100% and erased the dress in the desaturated layer.

05. You need to make another new layer on top of that one. Make the layer the color B3DFEE and set it to 'color burn'.

06. This layer will be the text. I just used simple Georgia font on italics & bold, size 14 font to write "joy". Then we make a new text layer and used size 3 of that same font. Here I just typed in a bunch of random letters to make it look good lol.

07. Here I just used a 1 pt. black border that goes around the whole icon. You can basically use any border that you have. Or draw one in yourself with the line tool.

08. Almost done! Yes, ontop of the border, we need to use a light texture from gender. This texture needs to be on 'screen'.

09. Last step --- A new layer on top of everything of the color EAD9BE. It needs to be put on multiply.

The end! I hope it helped you a bit. If you need help you can comment and ask. And I'd love to see what you guys make :].
