Running in Old Sneakers

Today I found out what it is like to run in old and worn out sneakers. I went for a 3 mile run with a friend from college. She has about a 3 min per mile pace slower then me so it was an easy run. I knew that from the get-go so that was fine. I need easy runs every once in a while and it’s always better running with someone then by yourself. Anyway, I went out in my old Nike sneakers. I thought, no big deal. I used to run in them back in senior year of college before I knew anything about running and running sneakers…perhaps it was alright back then, because they weren’t worn out. At about mile two, my feet started to hurt. Like really hurt. I had asked if my friend wanted to stop and she said no. This friend is fairly new to running and I knew there was a chance she would want to stop running and walk. But she wanted to finish out the run. So I just pushed through the last mile. Not too big of a deal. It felt like when you break in new soccer cleats or something like that. I knew there might be a chance for blisters. I only have one. On the side of my big toe (the weirdest spot ever). I can see other selected red, irritated spots on my foot, but no blisters. I might go for a run in the morning despite the already agitated foot. Short run.

All in all, I found that the sneaker does make a difference. Running in a proper sneaker can make all the difference…or at the very least I guess I should say running in a sneaker that is not worn out, can make all the difference.
