So fall break's officially over, as of today. Best indication to tell me that it really is back to the grind- I'm completely confused again. In Property and Contracts, the only difference being that I like Property even when I don't understand it and I dislike Contracts whether I understand it or not (usually, not.)
It occurs to me that it's probably not a good sign that in doing an overview of what we've covered in Contracts so far, my reaction was something like 'I don't remember studying all this.'
In Red Sox news- Game 7 tonight! Which means the Sox actually won Games 5 and 6. Josh Beckett, I don't know what's wrong with you but I have to hand it to you, you've got a lot of guts. As one of the ESPN columnists put it, Score one, chutzpah.
Jon Lester- I still believe...
And on the election, one little exchange at a McCain rally that just seems to encapsulate a lot of my problems with the McCain campaign-
Nameless McCain supporter: Obama scares me because he's an Arab.
McCain: No, ma'am, he's a decent family man.
First of all, I want to know exactly how that woman defines 'Arab' because, in the immortal words of Inigo Montoya, 'I do not think it means what you think it means.' It's not just a blanket 'scary' word for someone who's "un-American" or whatever; it really does have a specific meaning-- and Obama's not it. Hate to break it to you but African-American (or half African-American) is not the same thing as Arab. He lived in Indonesia for a time but that doesn't make him 'Arab' either since 1. Indonesia is not Arabia or anywhere near it and 2. living somewhere doesn't make you a member of that nationality or I would be British because I lived in England for a year (hey, I like that rule; let's use it- I'd love to be British! And Jesus was born in a stable so that makes him...) And while I'm at it, 'Arab' isn't an epithet and shouldn't be used as one. Neither is 'Muslim' and for that matter, Arab and Muslim aren't inter-changeable terms. Let's stop broadcasting ignorance and bigotry, shall we, because last I checked, it wasn't good to be either ignorant or bigoted.
And Senator McCain, while the first word of your answer was correct (too little, too late), nice way of implying that the terms 'Arab' and 'decent family man' are mutually exclusive. And you're a politician too. When did it become politically correct to insult Arabs? (Oh yeah, don't answer that, 9/11.) And we wonder why people call Americans ignorant?
If Barack Obama's campaign is about the message that 'America is better than this and we need to believe in a better America' it seems to me like McCain's campaign is increasingly about the message that 'No, we really are just as ignorant, racist and bigoted as people claim and damn it, I'm going to put my ignorant, racist and bigoted country first because being ignorant, racist and bigoted is a good thing if that's what America is, because America's all good and always right and anyone who says differently is lying and unpatriotic.' (Yes, I meant for that sentence to sound as rambling and run-on as it is; I call it Palin-speak, how'm I doing? Palin-speak, every English major's worst nightmare.)
Now to make a quick run to the law school and then to return to Property- and hope that the third time's the charm in understanding the reading...
