America, Land of the ... Theocrats?

Now admittedly, I recognize the fact that religion has been a part of the United States of America's history since its inception.  However, I have always understood that the U.S. of A. was to be a secular government that represented a generally religious populous.Now you may be asking yourself, "why am I remarking about this now over any other time?"  To that I must answer that it is a reaction to this article.

For those who don't know, I was born and spent a significant part of my life in the "Heart of America" and while I may not consider myself an Ohioan, I will always have a certain level of interest in the state. The fact that one of the candidates for governor lauds the importance of a government centered on God strikes a chord with me.  I am very tired of the hubris of such persons and I find myself having only contempt for that point of view.  It's that propaganda that is alienating for me as it runs contrary to what I believe the founders of this nation planned out for it.  I believe "the truth" to be self evident and that I do not require an orator representing some entity "from on high" to tell me what is morally right or wrong.  Especially when they attempt to dictate matters of the heart!

::insert large sigh here::

I just wonder sometimes how much this land is worth fighting for.  I intellectually understand that there I am legally considered a citizen of this country and protected equally under the laws as others are but, due to the lack of respect for same-sex relationships that much of the public seems to hold, I cannot help but feel like a second class citizen.  People are just so... disappointing.
