Day 16 or 17
Christ, I feel like I'm back at Wammy's. Back before L died, I mean. I'm an idiot for not getting that earlier. I thought that this was going to be just like a regular place. Five hundred years in the future on a spaceship, sure, but I assumed the people were going to be just regular people going about regular lives. The first week or so I was stuck in this damn assumption. Despite all sorts of blatant hints, I still refused to believe that something strange was going on here. Even when that guy came up calling himself Anubis. I thought he was kidding, or maybe just named after the god of death. After all, people can't see real death gods unless they've touched that death god's notebook. Now I'm not so sure.
See, this is why it reminds me of Wammy's. Every day is a power struggle, even when it's not. Pissing contests erupt on a regular basis on those damn forums. Some people have all the subtlety of Mello, and others comments are as understated as Near's. And since I was being a complete prat at the time, I completely missed most of it.
This isn't a random collection of ordinary people. Regular people may bitch and fight from time to time, but the scheming going on is a bit more complex than flamewars and Vent arguements. And judging from some of the comments, a lot more dangerous. Apparently my roommate has killed people. Not that that bothers me, but he didn't initially seem like the type, and his comments aren't exactly repentant. Either he killed people in this 'secret organization' job he mentioned, and doesn't feel bad about offing bad guys, or he's a psychopath. Not really sure which one worries me more. I really should read the forums a bit more closely. Most of it is useless, just people sniping at each other for stupid reasons. But I've probably missed a few important things by ignoring it.
I can't afford to be complacent here at all. At Wammy's we were just a bunch of kids. Kids jockeying for position as heir to the best detective in the world, but still just kids. And they usually ignored me because I didn't want any part of it. Here if I ignore something, I could die. After what happened to that kid...
That Obito kid who died the other day. I don't think it was an accident. I hacked the security cams and all it shows is a kid-sized shadow opening the airlock. For one, the way the security cameras are set up that shouldn't be possible. The cameras are placed so they have the best view of the area. The lighting is great, and no one else who passes by the camera is obscured nearly that much. It looks like someone deliberately shadowed out the form. I can't check for evidence of tampering without breaking into the police HQ, and there's no way in hell I'm doing that. But from just looking at the footage it doesn't look edited. It almost looks like there was some giant shadow there. I can't think of any natural way that could happen. And that's the thing that really is starting to worry me. What if there are supernatural things on this ship? Yeah, it's a stupid idea, but... I'm worried it could be that death god guy, but even the Death Note can't make obscure someone in shadow. Actually, there's no real reason to do that if you want to hide a murder. The shadow makes it more suspicious. If it was a clear shot of the kid, it wouldn't be as suspicious. But the shadow implies murder and some unnatural element.
Secondly, there should be no way for that to happen. There are locks on the door already, both electronic and physical. Somehow they completely bypassed the electronic security codes and just opened the door. But even if there was no security code, the door is damn heavy. It's almost as hard to open as an aircraft's boarding hatch. It would take a couple grown men to open it, not just one kid. These were security measures put in place before the accident, so that something like that wouldn't happen. And it shouldn't have been possible, except that it happened.
My suspicions? I want to say it's the Anubis guy, but something about that just seems wrong. The shadow, for one. I've read the rules, saw all the evidence of Kira's actions. A death god, or at least one from my universe, couldn't do that. Besides which, why kill the kid? And why in such an obvious way? Unless they're Kira, death gods apparently just kill people in natural ways. The few of L's reports that we found, and Mello's experience with Shidoh, seem to show that death gods themselves are lazy. The humans they give the Notes to may come up with more original ideas, but the death gods themselves aren't very imaginative.
So this would seem to imply that there is a Kira onboard. Even then, I doubt it. A judgemental Kira wouldn't randomly kill a child. A bloodthirsty Kira would have killed more than one person, and would probably have come up with a more interesting death. This might be the case of a selfish Kira--someone who thought Obito was annoying and just offed him--but that still doesn't seem very likely. That shadow bothers me.
Other than that, my only suspect is that medic girl. Really that doesn't seem very likely. The only reason she's on this list is because she reported it and didn't seem very concerned that someone had just died a horrible and baffling death. Why did a random medic announce this death, and not a police officer? She wasn't in the vicinity to observe it. If she hacked the security cameras and saw it that way, it was impossible to tell just by looking at the image that that was Obito. It could have been any kid or short person on the ship. So how did she know?
So that's how it is right now. I'm stuck five hundred years in space with a bunch of power-hungry psychopaths, at least two murderers, a possible deathgod, and no bloody cigarettes. Hell, at this point I'd be happy to see Near. He may be an arrogant, antisocial, manipulative bastard, but it would be a familiar face.

((Problems: Still too close to my regular writing style/ vocabulary. Also really rambling.))
