A piece of melancholy

Between me and the abyss of sin - hundred leagues of a distance.
A mad dog could run over that span - in a time that is nil.
With no way to explain, there is more that one instance
Of the reasons, compelling you act as you will.

The injustice is first to root out all pity and kindness,
And as absent they are, all that's human has also passed.
Only frame of devotion with glued-on calmness
Holds my image of human, as long as it lasts.

- A translation in the American language, by Mykola Sereda

- Taking into account a remark by the poetess :-)

- The more faithful terms for "терпіння і вірність" ought to be "patience and fidelity", of course. But what can I do? "Devotion" is more than "fidelity", and "calmness" is less than "patience" - but the sum total, hopefully, is close enough :-)

- Contrary to giving an advice and offering the corrections to an author, the poetesse in our case - a translator is a fair object of this game. Seriously - anybody who could do really better, would be welcome.
