I want to just die I'm so happy. GreenGecko is writing the third novel in her Snape-adopts-Harry series. First was Resonance, then Revolution, now Resolution. She's already up to Chapter 7 and I had no idea!
I thought I had her on author alert over at the
OWL archive, but it seems I didn't. I was posting about her fics over at the
Potterficweekly forum and did a quick search on her stuff and was so ecstatically happy to find she's already started.
I can't tell you how happy this makes me, these were the first fics of this nature I stumbled upon, and (along with
A Year Like None Other by aspenlight), remains some of my absolute favorite genfics of all time.
It's a weird thing, but I really like reading about Harry and Snape seeing past their differences and getting along. It just fills my tummy with warm goodness, ya know? ;)
So, if you like these types of fics, and haven't read these yet - or want to explore, go to her website
here and pick a link to read from. You won't regret it. Her Harry is delightfully in keeping with JKRs version, and her Snape manages to be loving without fluffy. She imbues her world with imaginative and interesting magical details and has one of my favorite original fictional characters (Vineet) of all time.
I, for one, will be spending part of my weekend catching up on what I've missed! :D
It's been quite a while since I've read it, but here are my favorite bits (in no particular order):
Harry's Animagus form - This is so creative, and so wonderfully done. I love the idea that predators are more difficult to turn into than prey, and that Harry would have a hard time accepting the fact that he's such a large and dangerous creature.
Vineet - I love this character. I usually hate original characters, not only because they're often Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu's, but because this is often where a writer's inexperience can show. Given that JKR has done all the hard work in creating the universe and characters, an inexperienced writer can still do a bang up job with creating plot and such. Starting from scratch, however . . . . Well anyway, this character is unique, believable and flawed and wonderful, and I love his interaction with Harry.
Snape's parents - I love the strained relationship Snape has with both his parents in this fic. His father, with his disapproval and his young wife, his mother with her coven and her distance. The relationships really ring true, and I love how Harry views them as well.
The Dark Plane - The whole idea behind this is just fantastic. The creatures, the half-starved werewolf, the fear of bringing them into the real plane. Norway! Everything . . . just a wonderful story arc. I also love that, although Harry has this special power, he's more afraid/confused by it than anything else. Very believeable for Harry's character.
The Hogwarts Founders' Book - I imagine Minerva would give quite a lot to be able to access this book. ;) And it's wonderful that you have to learn a passage before you can go on. I love these types of magical details - makes the universe that much richer.
Harry's Chimrian, Kali - Again, so imaginative and a wonderful addition to the story. (Plus I think she's cute)
Snape and Harry's relationship - There actually isn't enough Snape in this story - and that's my sole complaint really. I do love their relationship, though. Snape's protectiveness of Harry, and yet his ability to let Harry do things on his own as well. I especially loved their interaction when Harry gets reduced to age 9 for a little while, and Snape isn't all fluffy. He's still very stern and straight-forward, but loving. Takes him to the zoo, but doesn't cave in when Harry tries acting like Dudley (his only role model at the time). It was also heart-breaking to hear 9 year-old Harry's thoughts on how much chicken he could take and to see how angry this made Snape.
And finally, I really like her characterization of Harry. Before reading these stories, I usually shied away from Harry POVs mainly because I figured I got enough of that with JKRs work, really. This author, though, manages to catch the essence of Harry, while making him her own. Harry has plenty of insecurities and issues, and yet he's very strong-minded and confident as well. Problems arise, and he pushes past them, much like canon Harry. I especially like that, even though she's saddled him with far too many powers for one skinny little wizard, those powers are not free. He's constantly having to figure these powers out, trying to control them, trying to deal with people fearing him, and learning to take guidance even when his desires are different. Such a compelling world she writes. ;)
