Just a reminder that while SOPA is shelved, PIPA is not :(

Charleston is a beautiful city, visited there, for the first time, in September. I find that a lot of the city is over-priced so you might do better on one of the smaller islands. Although, I hear Canada is nice and you don't have to deal with the wishy-washy American government :)

MegaUpload would be one of the very many sites that would be shut down. THIS article has a very basic breakdown of PIPA and SOPA.

SOPA, to me, seems like the worst one, mostly because it would allow the government and private businesses the ability to get a court order to shut down the site and blacklist it. Once you're blacklisted, there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. The government would get to decide what is allowed on the internet and therefore limiting our freedom of speech, a direct violation of the First Amendment. And, it looks like bloggers and blog sites would be some of the first ones shut down.

If I understood PIPA correctly, social networking and media sites would be the most affected. Any picture or video that you do not own 100% would be illegal. So all of our headers, pics, and gifs, for instance, on our LJ pages, would be in violation of this Act. Youtube would be almost completely shut down because of all the fan vids, interviews, slideshows put up are violating the Act. Basically, the only vids left on YT would be vids that artists make and put up themselves and actually own the rights to. Filesharing and storage sites (megaupload, mediafire, etc) would be shut down because of high probability of "pirating"...granted, that is what some use it for.

Another problem, with both Acts, is that whatever program they design to block/prevent the use of these websites is that it will open us up to a whole slew of security problems that I'm not sure they would be able to fix. It would basically give hackers almost free-access (that's how easy it would be to take down and/or get access to the system)...imagine what havoc someone could reek if they had access to anything that would destroy our economy even more than what it already is. They could, potentially, run the country into the ground because we rely so much on computers and technology.

To me, they're using pirating as an excuse to limit our freedom and control the people. Pirating has been somewhat under control for a while. Even if they do manage to get these bills passed, someone else is going to find another way to pirate and/or steal movies and music (which from what I understand, the movie business is putting up the biggest fuss).

You don't read my posts? My university is in Charleston, Illinois and I'm needing to get out of the dorms, so am looking for apartments.

If either of these gets passed, things are going to get very sucky around here.

I'm so, so sorry! Honestly, I haven't been reading many pages lately; I haven't had the time. I've either been on mine to rant or post a quick little thing and that's about it. I've only recently, in the past day or two, started to skim my pages a bit, and your post caught my eye. I hadn't realized that there was more than one Charleston, which I probably should have put a bit more thought into. Once again, I'm sorry.

There's actually quite a few Charlestons. There's SC, which you were talking about, Massachusetts, and our humble little abode.

I wrote a couple of days ago about how I need to get out of these dorms, because so much bullshit is going on and it's driving me mad.

Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember you talking about the noise and moving your bed. I've never lived in a dorm, but I've heard plenty about life there. I hope you're able to find an apartment and be able to have peace of mind.
