I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! And I want to - I want to smell dark matter!

The past two nights I have gone to sleep listening to 'The Voyager Recordings: Symphonies of the Planets'.

Joey sent me these tracks which were apparently released some time in the 1992. It's essentially the "sounds" that the Voyager spacecrafts picked up from solar winds and magnetospheres, particle and radio waves, and electromagnetic field noise in space itself. All translated into audible sound waves onto CD.

Perhaps it's the combination of the sounds and the valerian root I've been taking to help me sleep but it has been a completely cosmic, transcendental experience. There is something so soothing and familiar about the sounds. While at the same time incredibly eerie and chilling. I can feel myself in the void of space as I hit that moment between consciousness and sleep.

Each of the five tracks is about 30 minutes long. I can't even say how many of them I've gotten through. I'd be interested to know which tracks are associated with which planets but information on the net on the compilation seems to be slim. The entire set itself has been out of print for a while and it's only through piracy that it's available to the masses now.

It blows my mind to think there are levels of sight and sound and experience out there that we are unable to enjoy because of the limitations of our human forms. In a way it is like the entire universe is alive... even balls of rock and gas like planets still emit forces out into abyss.

Only in those moments between the conscious and unconscious am I able to calm my mind enough to hear what is being said.
