Summary: It happens in seconds and all he can think about the entire time is that he's gotta protect her. Forget about the fact that people are watching, forget the fact that people are judging him on his accuracy and precision. This is Bones we're talking about. His partner. His friend. His... everything. And if she's in danger, then he's gotta do what he can to protect her. No matter what.
Everyone has their moments. Moments when they fall in love and moments when they fall out of love only to be followed by moments where they fall right back into it.
For him though? Well, it's a little different. And really, let's face it. When it comes to him being him and Bones being Bones, isn't it always different?
“Temperance Brennan. You're in love with her. You're building a world around her- A family.”
So it's not until immediately after this is said, that he sees this look etched within Gordon Gordon's features. Blue eyes are looking into him now from across the set table (although, not quite the way that Bones' will do in a few minutes) questioning his logic and trying to get down into the heart of what's really going on here.
This is one of his moments and he can tell. His chance to fall deeper than he already is, into love.
He thinks of her a second later. Of her little laugh. Of the way it feels to simply be with her and what it might be like to be with her every night and every day. He can't possibly imagine something being able to brighten his day quite like her smiles do. And come to think of it, he doesn't want anything to be able to.
“The heart chooses what it chooses, doesn't it? We don't really have any say in the matter.”
It's words that form sentences that form coherent thoughts like this, that he thinks about when she walks to the table and his day brightens. She looks beautiful, he thinks. But then again, she always is.
The two of them are smiles and lame (made completely endearing because they're being told by her) jokes, over a concoction that consists of something he doesn't really want to even try. And over a glass of wine, he asks if she will do him a favour.
She says yes without hesitation and he still has no idea that there's isn't anything she wouldn't do to help him.
(Sweets' better half lets them be and it's over their sperm on corn smut that they have, what he calls, a date, when he's later lying in bed that night.)

She tags along with him the next morning to the FBI Academy. Her arm finds its way atop his before they walk into the door and by the time they actually walk through it, it is his hand that is on top of hers. There's not a doubt in her mind that he'll be able to do this and that he'll be able to do it well. And knowing that- knowing that belief she has instilled within him unconditionally, he feels like he could do anything.
He slides the earplugs and glasses into place, cocks the gun and takes aim at his target. It happens in seconds and all he can think about the entire time is that he's gotta protect her. Forget about the fact that people are watching, forget the fact that people are judging him on his accuracy and precision. This is Bones we're talking about. His partner. His friend. His... everything. And if she's in danger, then he's gotta do what he can to protect her. No matter what.
Bullets make contact on the papers across the room, and there is a smile and a thumbs up waiting just for him when he turns from his success. He looks at her a moment, sees what's always been there before his eyes flicker towards the evidence of what she does to him. And it's within that evidence (the marks left by the bullets), that he sees what they can be with just a little more time.
They can be.
And he just needs to show her that.
