Well, it's finally official.
We saw hubby's specialist yesterday, and we don't go back for 4 months!!!.
The wound healed about 2 weeks ago, but we didn't want to tell many people -just in case. About a week later the PICC line broke off at the end, so it was removed. He hasn't had any antibiotics for 3 weeks, so here's hoping we've finally reached then end of the nonsense.
He's made the decision NOT to get another hip replacement.
About 3 days ago he was going to sit down and felt the "hip" "go" in the same kind of motion that dislocated the first replacement and started us down this road 12 months less one week ago. Fortunately the fact that he has no hip joint, means it is impossible to dislocate. The way the scar tissue moved, however, has made him a little more tender than he was, but still nothing like as sore as before the original replacement.
In the meantime, I have "gone into retirement". It was not entirely by choice. I would have preferred to wait at least another 12 months. (Even 2 would have been better than this.) But somehow my employer and my doctor managed to get EI to cover me. It is not normal to get EI if you quit. It's only 10 weeks worth, because I already had 5 through December and part of January, but a very considerate lady with EI phoned to explain what was happening, and told me that if I could work another 100 hours before Jan 21, 2008, there was a good possibility of collecting another 15 weeks worth of EI. How's that for knocking the hell out of my comments about bureaucracies?
I said I wanted to get some yard work done. Well, it's finally starting to look decent around here.
It would have been nice to have more flowers, but the beds and window boxes are tidy, and do have some colour in them. The work Kenny hadn't been able to do for the last 2 or 3 years was actually a little more than I had realized. It's slowly getting caught up. He can't DO very much, but has some good suggestions, and he does all the watering from his scooter. We're making plans for the things to do this fall and next spring. I am SO looking forward to getting things back in shape, but it will take a lot of time. That is not to say that the place was a mess - it just hasn't been as attractive outside as it used to be.
We think something along the side of the steps will be a major project for next year. The shallow steps themselves were a big project this year, but well worth it.
I've even been doing some reading. "A Mighty Heart" makes our struggles seem somehow insignificant. (I know, it's recently been turned into a movie, and the critics found Angelina Jolie did an excellent job of portraying Marianne Pearl). She's some incredible woman.
