I watched the new "special edition" of this film the other night. Wow! I remember how much this movie meant to me when I was in High School. I could not imagine anything better than being Steve Buscemi as the only white guy who could hang with Larry Fishburne and his badazz posse of inner city no-goodniks.
Like a lot of middle class white guys I got into gangsta rap in the early 1990s as a way of pissing off my parents and an attempt to show how with it and hip (hop) I was. Well, I failed miserablely but by God and Baby Jesus King of New York holds up mighty fine.
Who new how influential it would end up being?
Referemces to it pepper rap lyrics like so many .32 holes.
Larry Fishburne is not just chewing the scenery, he is mainlining it! After all those years of seeing him play a dad or (shudder) Morpheus, this was the Fishburne I first got to know, the one who scared me and made me PAY ATTENTION!
BEST CHRISTOPHER WALKEN PERFORMANCE EVER! Really, I don't care what other movies he has been in or why you think his work in The Deer Hunter is the finest blah, blah, blah. Walken as Frank White, the titular King, is brilliant. Just Brilliant. The shots of him staring directly into the camera are strange and beautiful like a John Lurie sax solo.
I just got off work and want to have a beer before I go on with this so you (who is reading this?) will have to wait until tomorrow for part 2 of this review (or whatever it is).
My love to Owl Enchilada and Graham, who needs it more than anyone except my cats.
