How Not to Have a Thanksgiving Holiday

Hope everyone on LJ had a great Turkey day (in both the MST context and otherwise). Ours has been - shall we say - less than such.

Paula had the whole week off, and she had lots of plans - making stuff for her sister's and my cousin's feasts, housecleaning, shopping, etc. So naturally on Monday, she came down with what she thought was a stomach virus - nausea, runs, a slight case of upchubbery. She got worse, then she got better, then she got worse, then she got better.

By Thursday, the stomach thing was waning, although she still didn't feel like going to Thanksgiving at anyone's house. However, she began to develop a horrible cough, one that was hurting her chest. She found a puffer of Albutirol that she had gotten for a previous bout of bronchitis, and that seemed to relieve things.

Then yesterday, I came home after a trip to pick up some bread & Tylenol, and she was laying in bed, flushed and hot. A check with the thermometer showed that her temp was 106!

!!!

A quick trip to the ER showed that she has pneumonia in her right lung, plus pleurisy (which is, I think, inflammation of her lungs via scraping on the sides of her ribcage). They admitted her, and after about 3 hours they finally got her up to her room.

Since then, she's gotten steadily better, thanks to the breathing treatments and the antibiotics. If she's non-febrile (your word for the day - it means no fever) for 24 hours on the IV antibiotics and then 24 hours on oral, they'll let her go home.

Of course, the downside of this is that she won't be back to work on Monday, which means she'll lose her unemployment pay for the week (Head Start doesn't just give you the week off, they make you take unemployment), but we're not overly concerned with that at the moment - just that she's out of danger.

The other downside is that Decatur's hospital doesn't have a wireless network for patients and visitors, so no hospitalblogging for me. But since she's in a semi-private room, they make me leave at about 9:00 PM anyway. Which is why I'm here, explaining all this.

So how was your week?

paula
