As I was heading down the steps to the Downtown N/R platform at Times Square today, I heard the sound of horns, which are not the usual subway musical instruments.
On the platform were to large black men, standing facing each other. They each had a trumpet, one brass, one chrome. They were playing a jazz tune in close harmony, working together and then breaking off each other. With the hard surfaces of the subway tunnel, it sounded like there were many more than just two horns playing.
I dropped a dollar into their music case, and listened until my train came.
