You know those wierd-shaped, funky, bumpy fall squashes and gourds you always see in grocery stores in the weeks before Halloween?

I just ate one.

The label called it a sweet dumpling squash, green and light green ribs, with a splotch of pumpkin orange down one side. It had a few of those Right Whale lookin' carbuncles on it. It was orange and pumpkin-smelling when I cut it in half. I nuked it for about 5 minutes, which in my microwave is too much. I might have to just start halving recommended cooking times with that thing. When I took it out, it was baby-poop yellow and kinda shrunken, but it had gone from wooden to tender and it practically fell apart when I took a fork to it.

The flesh was soft and thready, about like mashed sweet potatos, and had a plant-y, sweet flavor, with a suggestion of butter. It wasn't unpleasant at all, really. Hell, Witty fuckin' looooved it. Ate just about every piece I gave him, and helped himselve to a couple more. We'll see in an hour or two if a sweet dumpling squash agrees with kitty digestion.

food, witty
