Back o' my neck gettin' dirt 'n' gritty.
Or something similar to that. D and I are sweating it out in Nicole's (her sister) apartment, waiting for Seung, waiting for my rice cooker to go Ping!, and more urgently waiting for a possible thunderstorm. We've apparently picked not only the hottest week of the year to visit, but it happens to be the hottest week NYC's had in a while, too. To Danielle and I, it's like, woo, we brought the South with us. Bleh. Poor Nicole, however, is suffering a bit more than we, since she is more used to 80 degree summers. However, she appears to be a no-fuss kind of girl, and she doggedly deals with the situation. By taking a nap. Which sounds like a good idea, except I'm not quite tired, and we've pushed the air matress away for Seung's visit and for dinner.
Ah, it does look like rain approaching...
We're having fun, despite the heat. Danielle and I touristed a bit in Chinatown this morning, impressed by the vast array of sea creatures one can dry and put in bins for public sale. We purchased nick-nacks and meandered, not entirely accurately, back to Nicole's apartment, where we are now sweating cheerfully. Danielle's just put her book down and is dealing with the now-cooked rice. I'm tapping away on Nicole's iBook, and Nicole is dilligently snoozing. The iBook is playing an interesting mix of mellow r&b, jazz, and modern arabic/lebanese music.
I suppose I was kind of expecting a bit more touring and sight-seeing by default, but I think I'm much more satisfied with this day-to-day, rather mundane vacationing. Minus the heat, I've been loving what I see of the city. The rebuilt streets, the nook-and-cranny shops, the huge variety of people (which is my favorite part)... Danielle's a bit put off by the press of huge population, but is also having a great time. I tagged along with Nicole today while she picked up a few things from a nearby arabic market area. I have to confess, I wish I had more spendable money on me, because so much of that food looked extremely tasty. The grocery store owner downstairs (who is Egyptian, also the landlord) is extremely nice. The people nearby converse with each other loudly.
I continue to enjoy the world around me, and all the people in it, whether they know it or not.
