Internet Rule # 34

It’s been almost twenty-three years since Tim Berners-Lee came up with the name “World-Wide Web” as a placeholder until he could think of a better way to describe the interlinked computer network he envisioned. No technology has ever taken hold or become so ubiquitous so quickly. Eighteen years ago I was still trying to explain to my employer why universal Internet access was vital to the company. Fifteen years ago the Internet was reaching the homes of people who’d never owned a personal computer before. Now we've passed beyond personal computers. Everyone is connected 24-7 via a little screen they carry in their pockets. I'm told some people even make telephone calls with them.

One of the things the Internet has brought us is an end to uniqueness. Do you think you’re the only one in the world who fantasizes about thus-and-so? Type it into Google and see how many hits come back! This has allowed lonely perverts and fetishists to reach out and find others with complementary kinks. The rest of us have had our horizons broadened knowing that such things even exist.

I stumbled across a new one - new to me, that is. It seems there are men who derive sexual pleasure from giving money and gifts to women on the Internet who they never meet, in return for ... well, nothing at all. In the words of one financial dominatrix, it’s all about “abusing pathetic males who have a weakness for handing over their cash to superior dominant women like Myself!”

I know a few people into BDSM and understand a bit about playing games with power exchange, although it’s not really my thing. It’s playing cops and robbers without pants, I guess. But giving money to women I’ll never meet just for the thrill of impoverishing myself? I don’t get it.

Hey, there are lots of things in this crazy world I don’t get. Whatever turns you on or gets you off, so long as you’re consenting adults. It’s certainly free from any possibility of sexually transmitted infection. The only real issue is that sending money to strange women on the Internet can lead to financial ruin, but that seems to be part of the thrill. In extreme cases, people can become compulsive about it. There are apparently financial domination “addicts” whose lives are in shambles over their kink. There's even a LiveJournal support site for people trying to recover from Financial Domination Addiction.

A friend told me about something called Internet Rule #34. "If something exists, there is a porno of it online. No exceptions." I wonder what the porno of Financial Domination looks like?
