The sexual landscape has changed a great deal in the last fifty years.  When I was born, miscegenation was still illegal in some states.  Gay bars were regularly raided by the police.  Now we have a biracial president, and my favorite Massachusetts congressman, Barney Frank, just married Jim Ready at a wedding at which the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives danced.

It wasn't all that long ago that certain sexual acts were considered deviant and others downright pathological.  Now they're considered normal, or maybe just a little kinky.  Three of the books on the New York Times bestsellers list are the volumes of an erotic trilogy about a woman's experience with submission and sado-masochism.  A fourth bestseller is the boxed set.

Speaking of which,  a friend of mine told this story:

Four guys have been going on the same fishing trip for many years. This year Ron's wife puts her foot down and tells him he isn't going.

Two days later, the other guys get to the camping site only to find Ron sitting there with a tent set up. "Ron, how did you talk your missus into letting you go?"

"Well, yesterday evening, after my wife finished reading "Fifty Shades Of Gray," she pulled me into our bedroom. On the bed she had handcuffs and ropes! She told me to tie and cuff her to the bed, and I did. Then she said, "Do whatever you want."

So, here I am.

Anyway, times have definitely changed.  Elaborate costumes, electronic devices…  where does it end?

Furries get their kicks by dressing up as anthropomorphized animals and interacting with others also in costume.  These are not to be confused with zoophiles or plushophiles; they don't want to engage in sex with animals or stuffed toys.  They just enjoy anthropomorphic art and costumes.  And some of them have a major sexual interest in it.

The Unindicted Co-Conspirator sent me this link to the latest from ThinkGeek: Brainwave Cat Ears.  Now you can wear cat ears that actually respond like real cat's ears!  And it's automatic - they apparently pick up on your brain’s electrical patterns.

This year it's ears.  What will next year's model do?

I predict some very interesting conventions in the near future.
