The World-Wide Whisper

I type this on a PowerMac I bought five years ago. It's been a solid and reliable performer, and given the current economic uncertainties, it's unlikely to be replaced any time soon. It's not the machine I really wanted, though. As every Apple fan knows, the best model is always the second release, Revision B. Various rumor sites gave tantalizing hints of the glories that would be revealed by His Steveness next Tuesday, but the rumors were invariably false. Then one day, we faithful Mac-heads read a rumor from an unimpeachable source: MacBidouille.com, a French website. I wrote a little ditty about it.

The day dawned bright with rosy light.
We jumped up from the sack.
With hearts afire for our desire,
The Rev B PowerMac.

Full fourscore days in deep malaise,
We'd waited for Rev B.
But now our eyes would spy the prize,
The ultimate PC.

News of the score we'd heard before,
While waiting on the bench.
Then 'gainst all hope came the straight dope,
The rumor was in French.

Surely today we'd have our way,
Surely today we'd see,
The G5 box that truly rocks,
The fabulous Rev B.

The minutes flew before we knew,
Yet no announcement came.
Despite our prayer no news was there,
Was this some kind of game?

With broken spears and downcast heads,
Came hunters home from hill.
Across the plain we'd searched in vain,
The prey evaded kill.

If you're inclined, please bear in mind,
The fickleness of chance,
The unseen Hand of Apple, and,
The perfidy of France.

Perhaps next week we'll hear a leak,
Proclaimed to all the nation,
A stunning clue that must be true,
Because it's in Croatian.
