Haven't written in this thing forever, figured I'd make a couple observations.
First, the disbanding of Translink is the most important thing facing Lower Mainland commuters in the next 5 years. With Translink calling the shots on big projects, people will be completely bankrupt by the time our moronic 'Olympic Legacy' rolls around. There is no way that Translink should be allowed to raise taxes, increase fares, and act like complete assholes without having been elected. These people are appointed, not elected and yet they can raise property taxes. The joke of it is that when Translink talks about huge projects, they always talk about how 'the federal governemtn is pitching in this amount' and 'the provincial government has committed this amount of money', but do they think we are so fucking stupid that we don't realize this is our own money?
Secondly, I saw Arcade Fire. I wrote a big long review that you can find at
http://indieworkshop.com/articles/179/ Needless to say, there were way too many people who hadn't heard them, but they kicked fucking ass. Vancouver's chaotic breed of hypehunters were out in full force and needless to say, it could be the show of the year; then again, Tom Waits did kick ass and TV on the Radio falls under the category of religious.
Third, the best albums of the year are as follows:
TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
Summer at Shatter Creek EP
Elliott Smith - From A Basement on the Hill
Devendra Banhart Rejoicing in the Hands
Architecture in Helsinki - Fingers Crossed
Arcade Fire - Funeral
The Six Parts Seven - Lost Notes from Forgotten Songs
!!! - Louden Up Now
Talking Heads - The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads
Shearwater - Winged Life
Fourth, I'm writing a book called 'The Part-time Revolution'. In it, I will argue for the 3 day work week. Its a work-in-progress, very much so..
For anyone wondering about Organ Trail, we're still on hiatus. I think Jess is in Africa now, not too sure though. Who knows if we'll get back together. I'm hoping we do, but if not, then Kanaka Creek will have to suffice, which it does. We should have some hits out in the new year sometime. We just scored 3 months of jam space starting mid-January, so that will let us set everything up, get the drums going, and really start strumming the shit.
That said, merry christmas everyone. This is where I'd say, hope to see everyone during the holidays, but the thing is, I don't have holidays so I can't say it.
