The fire was dying between them as they looked into each other’s eyes.
"I’m sorry," he winced inwardly at how insipid the words sounded.
"I’m sorry too," she sighed.
"I hope we can still be..." he trailed off awkwardly.
"Friends?" she supplied with a small, strained smile. "So do I."
He nodded, smiling uncomfortably. It was better to do this now, before things went too far, but at the beginning he’d hoped this relationship would last the distance.
She held out her hand. "Well… good bye, Bill."
The last flames of love flickered and vanished into ashes when he took her hand. "Goodbye, Fleur."
