I have a little time, yet, before the business of pre-school-year starts in earnest -- the business other people are involved in, I mean, not just my planning. Had a meeting today, though, and more tomorrow and Thursday (so maybe I'm just kidding myself when I say the business hasn't started yet...). But today I started to pull things out of cabinets where I'd stowed them, and I found out some about numbers for classes. Here's a hilarious fact: in 3rd hour, I have 20 students (all of whom I taught last year); in 4th hour, I will have 23 students (all but 1 of whom I taught last year) -- including 18 from that 3rd hour class. 18! I don't know if this is a good or bad thing, but we will at least switch locations between 3rd and 4th, since 4th hour's in the computer lab. How strange, though. Little schools are weird places. And speaking of, I was hoping that this year's comp and rhet classes (which were divided last year into sections of 25 and 5) would divide up better. But when I heard last week, it was actually going to be 26 and 4. Worse! It's being worked on, though, which is good -- because I only have 25 desks, and I don't really have room for more. Also because, you know, 4 students? It looks like it'll work out around 10 and around 20, and that'll be good. I can handle that.
Over lunch -- with the new principal, another teacher, one other lady -- we ran into a different teacher and her son, who graduated in May. Talking to her briefly, I mentioned that I hadn't done much to revise my syllabi yet, to which her son said, "Oh, you don't need to change yours." That's a compliment, I think, kind of, but it's also a sign that much of what happened last year was too easy. Still, entertained me. I'm going to miss last year's seniors; seeing that one today reminded me.
I came back to my house yesterday for the first time in three weeks -- again! I like my house, and I'm glad to be back to it. On the plus side, it was nice not to pay for air conditioning during these record-breakingly hot months. But it's good to be back to this quiet little town.
