1. Seven gears might be enough if it's not too hilly of an area. You use lower gears not only to climb hills, but also to tow things.

There's a lot of bikes on Dallas Craigslist: http://dallas.craigslist.org/bik/

2. From my experience, you only have to worry about weight issues on higher end bikes where they do their best to make the bike as lightweight as possible. Lower end bikes are generally beefier.

If your bike shop doesn't appreciate that you want to get exercise, then find a different shop. Don't go to Walmart either. :) Bike shops generally make their money on repeat business for accessories and service, so if they treat you like crap, they just lost a potential repeat customer.

3. Once he out grows the trailer, you can use it to get groceries or carry other stuff. He'll outgrow the seat carrier in no time.

Since you're interested in being car-free, why not take a look at a cargo bike? That'll be sturdy, and you can load it up with art supplies, groceries, etc.

Oh! I love your icon! Did you know Roger Miller is the voice of the rooster? So cool.

That's a really good point. Thanks for the links and the suggestions!
