My head hurts, but it's my own fault, so no complaints here

I'm off to Germany in a little over 12 hours. I was putting off packing, which I always do, but then I did it and it took about 10 minutes, which it always does, and somehow I was surprised again at how quickly it went, which I always am. I must be a bit daft.
I leavin' on a jet plane, but I know pretty much exactly when I'll be back again. So ( Read more... )

1. Who's your favorite pirate? This can be historical, literary, from a movie, anywhere.

My favorite pirate is Captain Firebeard and his Terrible Hat, with which he chases dwon innocent children and turns them into pirate captains whenever he catches them.

2. "It may be that languages are like lovers. Maybe you can have more than one at a time, but maybe you can only love one at a time." That's from some novel by John Crowley. Is it true, as relating to either languages or people?

Well, this definitely depends on the individual. I'd say it's much less true for languages, in general though. And what does it mean to love a language, in the sense that you love a lover... and how can someone be your lover and you don't love them... hmmm, strike that last semantically picked knit, actually. For languages, I suspect there are many people who speak multiple languages and take just as much joy in each one. For lovers, things get much more complicated, if only because the lovers, unlike languaes, are placed in the same quandry of multitude as you, or are at least involved in yours emotionally. It probably is possible to love more than one lover at the same time; it just gets complicated very quickly, whereas languages don't get jelous or anything like that.

3. If I died and turned into a zombie, would you shoot me in the head?

Yes. Yes, I would. Sorry. It might look like you, but it sure ain't.

4. What's the saddest thing?

I'm not sure overall for most people. For me though, maybe lost potential, or wasted opportunity. It can be so upsetting that I'll give up more potential and let go of other opportunities, since it can seem like if the full potential isn't utilized then what does it matter anyhow? Actually, that last part has only become less of a problem over the years.
But there are lots of other sad things out there. It's tough to choose.

I guess it's about time I come up with that 5th question, and then enough commenting, seeing as how I must be up to 2nd place already.

What do you want to do on Monday?
