Earlier this year I was asked to “help out with a tune” by friends who play in a local orchestra.
Last night I downloaded the recording of the performance and listened through it.
Ah, Mahler. “Help out a little on a tune” turned out to be 52 minutes of stage-time. I’ve not played his 1st symphony before, but it was a blast.
The performance problems I remember were there in the recording. I was surprised a little at listening to my own part. I’m not as bad on the soprano parts as I thought. My pitch in the throat-range of the bass parts was a little out-to-lunch. And in places where I thought my balance would have been louder, I wasn’t out there as much as I thought.
I’m looking forward to the recordings that should be in the mail from Ohlone. I want to see if this holds true there as well. I really think that was a great concert. If folks are interested, I’ll post it up here.
