debunkingwhite rocks my world.
Here's an interesting thread on racism and class http://community.livejournal.com/debunkingwhite/627189.html The jist is, upper class folks think it is tacky to be racist. Consequently, they sometimes pretend that racism no longer exists or is unimportant because it is a lower class problem.
nadyalec and I were talking about this very phenomenon in terms of online dating profiles not too long ago.
Another thread I read there today was all about racism in children's literature. Good stuff. Some books by Bob Dixon called Catching Them Young: Sex, Race and Class in Children's Books were mentioned. Have any of you read them? I'm into the subject, but I know I won't read them if they are really theoretical or written in a excessively academic style. Does anyone have good recommendations for children's books that do not promote prejudice and oppression? My sister's kids have a bunch of Walter the Farting Dog books which are great for that, but I'd love to give them more great books as they get older.
