I think my "friends" on LJ don't have any kid (that I know of, he he). Things change a second your child is introduced to this world, but you never thought about a small mundane thing such as planning for summer activities for your child.
Most school age children have like a 3 month vacation in summer, which I think it's insane, if you have working parents. Luckily, my son goes to a school that is on a "year round" system, which mean they get 6 weeks off during summer and one month off in March and November. It works great as we can travel during off season and six weeks in summer time is manageable.
Still, juggling family trip, swimming lessons, golf camp, visiting grandparents, and going to baseball games is like setting up a workplan. And of course you have to register those "lessons," "classes," and "camp" waaaaaaay in advance (with payments). If I'm planning my own trip, it's fun, but figuring out my son's summer plan is a chore (LOL). I need a large blank calendar to write down each activity to make sure anything won't conflict.
When I think back MY summer vacation (which was about 6 weeks also), both my parents were working and I think we only went to day trips, and maybe one summer camp. And I was tasked to keep myself busy. Mainly playing with my friends, I guess. Oh we had LOADS of summer homework that has to be turned in on 9/1 though. So I studied too. Horror!
Anyway, I just hope everything will mesh out and my son will have another great summer vacation. I'm delighted that we can go back to Cambria for fourth year in a row (underwritten by my in-laws) despite of this economy. My in-laws fear that there are a few years left for them to be able to enjoy a family trip with my son (that he doesn't want to go along when he grows up. I think they are hugely mistaken but hey, I won't complain!).
