So There's This Cloverfield Movie...

FTP and I had movie date night last night, and finally got the chance to take in Cloverfield. Knowing only that, like The Blair Witch Project, there was some shaky camerawork ahead, we sat in the back row. Solid choice.

There's at least a half a dozen better movies playing in theaters right now (There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men, Juno, Persepolis, The Savages, The Orphanage, to name a few options), so I'd say go spend your money on one of those.

Having said that, nothing about Cloverfield offended me to the outrage I've seen poured on it. It's a fun trifle of a film, with some really wonderful special effects that add a lot to the mostly blah acting going on. This is not a movie about great acting. It's a movie about stupid people doing stupid things amidst a big monster attacking their city. Panic, destruction, fear, lots of screaming, and a couple of decent chuckles from the "narration" of the cameraman. It's not trying to change the world. It's trying to present a fun twist on familiar material. And it succeeds on some levels, while others it doesn't do as well. But we both enjoyed it. It was a fun night out at the movies, and sometimes, that's all you need.

So there you go.
